Griezmann Shines as Atlético Madrid Comeback to Beat RB Leipzig in Champions League
Atlético Madrid put in a resilient performance to come from behind and beat RB Leipzig 2-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Leipzig took the lead in the first half through Christopher Nkunku, but Antoine Griezmann equalized for Atlético just before halftime. The Frenchman then scored the winning goal in the second half to give Atlético their first win of the Champions League campaign.
The win was a much-needed one for Atlético, who had lost their opening two games of the Champions League.
It also ended a run of three consecutive defeats for the Spanish side in all competitions.
Atlético started the game brightly and created a number of early chances, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
Leipzig took the lead against the run of play in the 28th minute when Nkunku fired home from inside the area.
Atlético responded well to going behind and equalized just before halftime when Griezmann headed home from a cross by Marcos Llorente.
The Frenchman then scored the winning goal in the second half when he converted a penalty after he had been fouled by Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.
Atlético held on to their lead in the closing stages to secure a vital win.
The win will give Atlético confidence ahead of their next Champions League game against Porto on September 28.
Leipzig, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back when they host Manchester City in their next Champions League game on October 5.
