Karen Read Murder Trial: Jury Deliberations Begin
Closing Arguments Underway
Prosecution and Defense Present Cases
The jury in the Karen Read murder trial began deliberating on Tuesday after hearing closing arguments from both the prosecution and defense.
Prosecutor John Pappas told jurors that Read, 41, "coldly and calculatingly" killed her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O'Keefe, in July 2022.
"The evidence in this case is clear," Pappas said. "Karen Read planned and executed the murder of John O'Keefe, and she must be held accountable for her actions."
Defense attorney Aimee Hamblen argued that Read was the victim of domestic violence and that she killed O'Keefe in self-defense.
"John O'Keefe was a violent man who terrorized Karen Read for years," Hamblen said. "She was afraid for her life, and she acted in self-defense when she killed him."
Jury to Decide Guilt or Innocence
The jury is now tasked with deciding whether Read is guilty of first-degree murder. If convicted, Read faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The trial has been closely watched by the Boston community, and the outcome is expected to have a significant impact on the city.
